Cost, revenue and profit efficiency measurement in DEA: A directional distance function approach

چکیده
Estimation of efficiency of firms in a non-competitive market characterized by heterogeneous inputs and outputs along with their varying prices is questionable when factor-based technology sets are used in data envelopment analysis (DEA). In this scenario, a value-based technology becomes an appropriate reference technology against which efficiency can be assessed. In this contribution, the value-based models of Tone (2002) are extended in a directional DEA set up to develop new directional costand revenue-based measures of efficiency, which are then decomposed into their respective directional value-based technical and allocative efficiencies. These new directional value-based measures are more general, and include the existing value-based measures as special cases. These measures satisfy several desirable properties of an ideal efficiency measure. These new measures are advantageous over the existing ones in terms of 1) their ability to satisfy the most important property of translation invariance; 2) choices over the use of suitable direction vectors in handling negative data; and 3) flexibility in providing the decision makers with the option of specifying preferable direction vectors to incorporate their preferences. Finally, under the condition of no prior unit price information, a directional value-based measure of profit inefficiency is developed for firms whose underlying objectives are profit maximization. For an illustrative empirical application, our new measures are applied to a real-life data set of 50 US banks to draw inferences about the production correspondence of banking industry.

Complete Closest-Target Based Directional FDH Measures of Efficiency in DEA
In this paper, we aim to overcome three major shortcomings of the FDH (Free Disposal Hull) directional distance function through developing two new, named Linear and Fractional CDFDH, complete FDH measures of efficiency. To accomplish this, we integrate the concepts of similarity and FDH directional distance function. We prove that the proposed measures are translation invariant and unit invari...
متن کاملAllocation efficiency in network DEA
The present study is an attempt towards remodeling cost, revenue and profit relationship within the network process. The previous models of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) have been too general in their scope and focused on the input and the output within a black box system, therefore they have not been able to measure various phases simultaneously within a network system. By using these mod...
متن کاملRevenue - Profit Measurement in Data Envelopment Analysis with Dynamic Network Structures: A Relational Model
The correlated models are introduced in this article regarding revenue efficiency and profit efficiency in dynamic network production systems. The proposed models are not only applicable in measuring efficiency of divisional, periodical and overall efficiencies, but recognizing the exact sources of inefficiency with respect to revenue and profit efficiencies. Two numerical examples, consisting ...
متن کاملThe directional hybrid measure of efficiency in data envelopment analysis
The efficiency measurement is a subject of great interest. The majority of studies on DEA models have been carried out using radial or non-radial approaches regarding the application of DEA for the efficiency measurement. This paper, based on the directional distance function, proposes a new generalized hybrid measure of efficiency under generalized returns to scale with the existence of both r...
متن کاملMeasurement of prot inefficiency in presence of interval data using the directional distance function
In many applied programs in real-life problems, both physical inputs and outputsare heterogeneous which in this case the ecient cost and income modelcan not apply to evaluate the cost and income of related turnover. So, a measurementbased on the directional value of prot was presented which we havedeveloped it in this paper and have computed it for interval data. In fact, wehave measured the in...
